This year, as a pre-Mother’s Day fundraiser, consider leading your congregation in buying African violets to save lives of people in sub-Saharan Africa through Imagine No Malaria, our Mississippi Conference missions focus.
A couple of weeks before Mother’s Day, May 14, church leaders can ask their congregation to purchase African violets in memory or in honor of mothers. They can buy these plants in bulk at a discount at a local garden supply store and sell them for an additional $10 each, giving this pretty gift to mothers on their special day. For each African violet plant sold, $10 can be donated to Imagine No Malaria.
The Mississippi Conference has set a goal to provide 100,000 insecticide-treated mosquito nets by Annual Conference in June 2017. Each net costs $10 and can protect up to four people from the mosquito that carries the deadly disease of malaria. Hundreds of thousands of people – mostly children under age 5 in sub-Saharan Africa – still die every year from malaria.
Checks can be made payable to the Mississippi Conference of the United Methodist Church with Imagine No Malaria on the memo line. Send checks to P.O. Box 1603, Jackson, MS 39215-1603.
